Alnwick castle and poisonous garden

Since 1750 the ancient castle had been surrounded by many beautiful gardens and parks with traditional and beautiful plants. Professional gardeners without risking their lives were caring for landscaping, and county residents calmly strolled along the alleys, enjoying the abundance of favorite flowers.
Unfortunately, during the World War II, the gardens had been destroyed, and the castle had been turned into ruins. Centuries later, the following owners of counties completely restored the building, and with it, gradually created a dangerous garden. Despite the risk to life, many tourists still are not afraid to come to this region and visit an unusual place.

Since 2000, a heiress of County, Duchess Jane Percy took into possession. While her husband was fascinated by the work and busy with other worldly troubles, the mistress of the castle decided to invite the best Belgian landscape designers and finally bring the garden back in order. Just imagine that the restoration of the whole area took about a few tens of millions pounds!
Upon completion of the reconstruction, a young heiress decided to add poisonous and narcotic plants to her collection of paradise. Having obtained a special license by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 2005, the gates of unique «The Poison Garden» were opened to the public.

Why did young owner of the castle choose these types of plants? Once in the library, Jane Percy had seen a very unusual book. The wonderful Italian town Padua of the XVI century was described there. At that time, you could find many gardens and parks. The beautiful city just buried in trees, flowers and other plants. However, there was a grove, which is particularly different from the others. It belonged to the Medici dynasty, which at one time often became ruler of the Florence. At first glance, an ordinary and a little neglected garden means a lot to the oligarchic family. This is where they grew poisonous plants, through which cleaned disobedient servants and those who dared "to move them dearly".

At present, there are more than 100 species of plants that are prohibited by law in many countries. For example, such as: hashish, Atropos belladonna, hemp, coca, mandrake, different types of toadstools and even well-known in the history strychnine. In fact, many scholars suggest that the queen Cleopatra, wanting to commit suicide, chose strychnine. Having tried its effect on her maids, she saw them dying in horrible agony with terrible expressions on their faces.
The queen did not use plants for herself, because she wanted to remain beautiful even after death.
