Alanya's story goes back to antiquity: as Korakesion it is mentioned in the 4th-century BC Greek periplus of Pseudo-Scylax. In 1221 the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Kayqubad I captured the city, which was then renamed Alaiye after him. The Seljuk era was its golden age, when Alanya served as a winter capital, and the citadel on the peninsula dates from 1226. Gedik Ahmed Pasha brought the city into the Ottoman Empire in 1471, and during his visit on 18 February 1935 Mustafa Kemal Atat?rk finalised the modern name Alanya.
