What to know about Baku

Baku is first mentioned in writing in the 6th century. In 1191 the court of the Shirvanshahs moved here from Shamakhi, and between the 12th and 14th centuries massive fortifications, including the Maiden Tower, were built. The Palace of the Shirvanshahs dates from the reign of Khalilullah I (1417–1462). In 1847 the world's first mechanically drilled oil well was sunk at Bibi-Heybat, and the Nobel brothers arrived in 1873. The Old City became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

Names linked to Baku

Physicist Lev Landau (1908–1968) and cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich (1927–2007) were born in Baku; composer Gara Garayev (1918–1982) came from a well-known Baku family of doctors. A monument to Taras Shevchenko by Ukrainian sculptor Ihor Hrechanyk stands on Azadliq Avenue since 30 June 2008, and Baku has been a sister city of Kyiv since 1997.
