A short history of Benidorm
Benidorm dates its founding to 8 May 1325, when Admiral Bernat de Sarri? granted it a town charter, creating the castle and the town. Iberian and Roman remains were found earlier, and around 1245 James I of Aragon conquered this part of Alicante. Barbary pirate raids around 1410 and 1448 left the town nearly deserted; in 1666 Beatriu Fajardo de Mendoza issued a new charter and the S?quia Mare canal brought irrigation water. In the 18th century local fishermen became famous for almadraba tuna fishing; when the main almadraba closed in 1952, the town turned to tourism.
Names linked to Benidorm
Admiral Bernat de Sarri? (1266–1335), baron of Polop, is regarded as the town's founder. Benidorm-born Pedro Zaragoza Orts (1922–2008) was mayor from 1950 to 1967, when the urban plan that turned the fishing village into a resort was adopted.

On the Mediterranean coast of the Marina Baixa, sheltered by the Serra Gelada, Benidorm is known as the "New York of the Mediterranean" and has more skyscrapers than any other Spanish city; the 202-metre Intempo is the tallest building in the Valencian Community. Above the Levante, Poniente and Mal Pas beaches, Blue Flag since 1987, rises the Balc?n del Mediterr?neo with castle remains, near the Church of San Jaime and Santa Ana (1740–1780), the Punta del Caballo tower and Benidorm Island.
