Bergamo: from Roman Bergomum to today

Bergamo was first settled by the Ligurian Orobii tribe in the Iron Age; as Bergomum it became a Roman municipality in 49 BC. From the 6th century it was the seat of a major Lombard duchy, and from the 11th century an independent commune within the Lombard League. In 1428 the city passed to the Republic of Venice, whose walls around the Upper Town have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017. Giuseppe Garibaldi brought Bergamo into the Kingdom of Italy in 1859, and so many locals joined his Expedition of the Thousand that it is called Citt? dei Mille. Since 2022 Bergamo has been twinned with Bucha, Ukraine.

Notable people of Bergamo

The composer Gaetano Donizetti, born here in 1797, wrote almost 70 operas and is buried in Santa Maria Maggiore. The famed juggler Enrico Rastelli lived and died here in 1931. Natives also include sculptor Giacomo Manz?, engineer Andrew Viterbi, inventor of the Viterbi algorithm, and skier Sofia Goggia (born 1992), the 2018 Olympic downhill champion.

Bergamo lies 40 km northeast of Milan, with the Bergamo Alps rising just north of the city. A funicular links the Upper and Lower Towns. Piazza Vecchia holds the 12th-century Palazzo della Ragione, next to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (begun 1137), the Renaissance Colleoni Chapel and the octagonal Baptistery of 1340; the Rocca fortress dates from 1331. The Lower Town has the Accademia Carrara gallery and the Donizetti Theatre. The city is served by Il Caravaggio International Airport, and its football club Atalanta has won the UEFA Europa League.
