Excavations in Brescia have uncovered a settlement dating to around 1200 BC; in antiquity the city was called Brixia. It became Roman in 225 BC, was recognised as a civitas in 89 BC, and Augustus founded a colony here in 27 BC. The Lombards made it the capital of a duchy in 568 or 569, and in 753 Duke Desiderius, the future king, built the Basilica of San Salvatore. Brescia passed to Venice in 1426 and stayed Venetian until 1797; in 1438 the Venetian Senate called it the "Lioness". It joined the Kingdom of Italy in 1859 and shared the title of Italian Capital of Culture with Bergamo in 2023.
Saint Angela Merici (1474–1540) founded the Ursulines in Brescia in 1535, and mathematician Niccol? Tartaglia (1499–1557) is among the city's notable figures. Violin-making pioneer Gasparo da Sal? (1540–1609) is buried in the church of San Giuseppe. Pope Paul VI (1897–1978) was born in nearby Concesio, and an international piano festival at the Teatro Grande bears the name of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (1920–1995).
Brescia sits at the foot of the Alps between lakes Iseo and Garda, with the Mella river crossing its western part. The Roman forum with the Capitolium (73 AD) and the San Salvatore-Santa Giulia monastery have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. Other highlights are the 11th-century Old Cathedral, the New Cathedral (1604–1825), Piazza della Loggia and the castle on Cidneo Hill, home to Europe's largest urban vineyard. The Mille Miglia classic car race starts and ends here, and Franciacorta sparkling wine comes from the area. Flowers to Brescia can be ordered online from Ukraine or anywhere else.
