Celestyn?w: a short history

Celestyn?w's recorded history begins on 17 December 1833, when Leopold Radzy?ski bought the estate, then recorded as Radzin, from his father. The brick Radzin manor was built in 1872–1875, and in 1873 the Radzin and Celestyny farmsteads were separated from the estate. The Vistula Railway, opened in 1877, shaped the village most: the first railway workers' houses appeared by the station around 1900. Between the wars it grew as a summer resort amid healing pine forests. On 19–20 May 1943 underground fighters freed prisoners being taken by train from Warsaw to Auschwitz at Celestyn?w station. The Gmina of Celestyn?w was created on 1 July 1952.

Virologist Hilary Koprowski (1916–2013), creator of the first effective polio vaccine, had his villa Kopr?wka here, became an honorary citizen in 2007 and has a street named after him. Lieutenant J?zef Czuma "Skryty" (1915–1944) led the 1943 action. Physicist Sylwester Porowski has organised summer holidays for children from Ukraine in nearby Lasek since 1994, and in 2019 the gmina signed a partnership with the Zastavne and Velyki Poliukhiv village councils in Lviv Oblast.

The village lies on the Masovian Lowland, 32 km south-east of central Warsaw and 10 km from Otwock, surrounded by more than 8,900 hectares of pine forest. Nearby are the Bocianowskie Bagno and Celestynowski Gr?d nature reserves and the Forest Education Centre with the Golgotha of Polish Foresters memorial.
