People lived here long before the city: Neolithic tombs from the 7th millennium BC were found on Eilat's western edge, and the copper workings of the Timna Valley are among the oldest on earth. The name Eilat was given in 1949, after biblical Elath, where King Solomon built ships. In 1955, with about 500 residents, the port and the Timna copper mines opened; Eilat became a city in 1959 and a free trade zone in 1985. After the 1994 peace treaty with Jordan, joint tourism projects with neighbouring Aqaba began.
