Greifswald's story begins in 1199, when Cistercian monks founded Eldena Abbey at the mouth of the River Ryck. In 1241 Prince Wizlaw I of R?gen and Duke Wartislaw III of Pomerania granted the settlement market rights, and on 14 May 1250 Wartislaw III gave it L?beck law. By the end of the 13th century Greifswald was one of the earliest members of the Hanseatic League, and in 1456 Mayor Heinrich Rubenow founded the university, the second oldest in the Baltic region. After the Thirty Years' War the town belonged to Sweden, passed to Prussia in 1815, and since 1990 has officially been the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald.
The Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840), who often painted the ruins of Eldena Abbey, was born here. Other natives include the poet Sibylla Schwarz (1621–1638), the writers Hans Fallada (1893–1947) and Wolfgang Koeppen (1906–1996), after whom the Koeppenhaus literary centre is named, and the footballer Toni Kroos (born 1990). Since 2016 Greifswald has maintained friendly ties with Drohobych in Ukraine.
The city lies on the Ryck where it flows into Greifswald Bay on the Baltic, midway between the islands of R?gen and Usedom. Its symbol is St. Nicholas Cathedral with a tower about 100 metres tall; nearby stand St. Mary's, nicknamed Fat Mary, St. James's Church and the Gothic-Baroque town hall on the market square. Visitors also see the ruins of Eldena Abbey, the wooden bascule bridge at Wieck, the Pomeranian State Museum and the Caspar David Friedrich Centre. The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics runs the Wendelstein 7-X fusion experiment here, and the Friedrich Loeffler Institute is on Riems island. In Germany it is considered bad luck to wish someone a happy birthday early, so it is best to deliver flowers on the day itself. At Christmas Germans often decorate their homes with poinsettias, the Christmas star, so festive bouquets with red flowers are a good fit. March 8 is a public holiday in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and across the country more and more women receive flowers that day. For holidays we recommend ordering a few days ahead.
We also deliver to other cities in the region: Berlin, L?neburg, Hamburg, Hanover. Delivery to Berlin and other cities is on the Germany page. For a surprise, give the address of the office or cafe where the recipient will be, plus a contact phone number.
The classics are red roses and 101 roses. For a softer mood choose spray roses or hydrangeas, and for a practical gift, flowers in a box. By occasion: birthday flowers, flowers for her, flowers for mom.
