Innsbruck means "bridge over the Inn": in 1180 the Counts of Andechs acquired land on the south bank, and "Insprugk" was first recorded. Market rights followed in 1187 and town rights between 1187 and 1205. The Habsburgs took control in 1363, the city became capital of all Tyrol in 1429, and Emperor Maximilian I resided here in the 1490s, adding the Golden Roof. The university was founded in 1669, and Innsbruck hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976.
Botanist Wilibald Besser (1784–1842), who worked in western Ukraine, came from Innsbruck. Mykola Kovalevsky (1892–1957), a member of the Central Rada and land minister of the Ukrainian People's Republic, edited a press agency here from 1950 and died in the city. Mountaineer Hermann Buhl (1924–1957) and ski jumper Gregor Schlierenzauer (born 1990), the record holder for World Cup wins, are also linked to Innsbruck.
The city lies on the Inn in a broad valley between the Nordkette range and Patscherkofel, 30 km from the Brenner Pass. Its symbols include the Golden Roof, the Hofburg, the Hofkirche with Maximilian's cenotaph, Ambras Castle and the Bergisel ski jump; the Hungerburgbahn funicular with stations by Zaha Hadid climbs towards the Nordkette.
