What to know about Kaufbeuren

The earliest records concern the lords of Buron, the town's medieval name, documented from 1112. After the family died out in 1167 the estate passed to Duke Welf VI and in 1191 to the Hohenstaufen. On 3 February 1286 King Rudolf I of Habsburg made Kaufbeuren an Imperial City, and in 1327 Vils in Tyrol received town rights under the law of Kaufbeuren. In 1802 the town passed to Bavaria. From 1946 the district of Neugablonz grew up, founded by people from Gablonz, today's Jablonec nad Nisou in Czechia, which is now Kaufbeuren's twin town.

Maria Crescentia H?ss (1682–1744), a nun canonised in 2001, was born here; the Crescentia convent bears her name. The writers Sophie von La Roche (1730–1807) and Ludwig Ganghofer (1855–1920) and the poet Hans Magnus Enzensberger (1929–2022) were also natives, as was Hans Liebherr (1915–1993), inventor of the mobile tower crane and founder of Liebherr.
