Krefeld in brief

Krefeld is recorded from 1105 as Krinvelde. The medieval town belonged to the counts of Moers, gained market rights in 1361 and town privileges in 1373 with the approval of Emperor Charles IV. From 1598 it passed to the House of Orange-Nassau, whose tolerance drew Mennonites from 1607; their congregation was recognised in 1657, and in 1683 thirteen families left to found Germantown in Pennsylvania. Krefeld became Prussian in 1702, and by 1763 the von der Leyen silk works employed half of its 6,082 residents. In 1929 it merged with Uerdingen.

Notable people of Krefeld

Artist Joseph Beuys (1921–1986) was born and raised here. Krefeld's notable people also include Heinrich Band (1821–1860), inventor of the bandone?n, Herm?s founder Thierry Herm?s (1801–1878), geneticist Charlotte Auerbach (1899–1994) and Germantown founder Abraham op den Graeff (1646–1731).

Krefeld today

The centre lies a few kilometres west of the Rhine, while Uerdingen sits right on the river, crossed here by the Krefeld-Uerdingen Bridge. Known as the "City of Velvet and Silk", Krefeld has the German Textile Museum, and the former von der Leyen residence, built from 1791, is now City Hall. Linn Castle and the old town of Linn, Mies van der Rohe's Haus Lange and Haus Esters, the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, the zoo and the botanical garden are worth a visit.
