Kunowice in brief

Kunowice was first recorded in 1337 as Kunersdorf, a village in the Brandenburg Neumark. On 12 August 1759 the Battle of Kunersdorf of the Seven Years' War was fought here, and the Prussian army of Frederick II, about 48,000 strong, was defeated by Russian and Austrian forces under Pyotr Saltykov and Ernst Laudon. After 1945 the village became part of Poland, first named Kunowsko. Until 21 December 2007 it had a rail border crossing to Frankfurt (Oder), closed after Poland joined the Schengen Area.

The village sits on the German border at the edge of the Rzepin Forest and effectively forms one urban area with S?ubice, sharing water and sewer systems and city bus lines, with its own railway stop. Its population grew from 530 in 1998 to 1,082 in 2015. Historical re-enactments are staged on the 1759 battlefield, and sights include the Church of St. Vincent de Paul and the former railway station.
