What to know about Limassol

Limassol grew up between two ancient city-kingdoms, Amathus and Kourion, both founded around 1100 BC. Records of the Council of Chalcedon (451) mention a bishop's see here, when the town was known as Theodosiana and Neapolis; Bishop Leontios of Neapolis was a notable 7th-century church writer. The name Lemesos was in use by the 10th century. Richard the Lionheart is believed to have married Berengaria of Navarre at Limassol Castle in 1191. Under the Lusignans (1192–1489) the harbour became a centre of trade, and in 1590 the Ottomans completed a new fort on the castle site. British administration after 1878 brought the first printing press (1880) and electric street lighting (1912).

Limassol today

The city stretches along the Mediterranean coast around medieval Limassol Castle, now a medieval museum, and the Old Port, home to a marina since 2014. The one-kilometre Molos seaside park runs along the front, and the Public Gardens include a zoo. Nearby are ancient Amathus with its Temple of Aphrodite, Kourion with its Greco-Roman theatre, and 13th-century Kolossi Castle. Limassol is Cyprus's main port and a wine centre linked with Commandaria; it hosts the Anthestiria Flower Festival in May and the Cyprus Wine Festival in early October.
