Marrakesh: from Almoravid capital to today
Marrakesh was founded around 1070 by Abu Bakr ibn Umar as the capital of the Almoravid dynasty. In the 1120s Ali ibn Yusuf gave it walls of red clay, the origin of its nickname, the Red City. The Almohads took the city in 1147; that year Abd al-Mu'min founded the Koutoubia Mosque, and in 1157 he laid out the Menara Gardens. Fez became the capital after 1269, but the Saadians restored Marrakesh's status in the 16th century, and Ahmad al-Mansur began the El Badi Palace in 1578. The medina became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
Names linked to Marrakesh
The 13th-century mathematician and astronomer Ibn al-Banna' al-Marrakushi worked here, and historian Mohammed al-Ifrani (1670–1745) taught at the Ben Youssef Madrasa. Designer Yves Saint Laurent bought and restored the Majorelle Garden, which now holds a stele in his memory.
