What to know about Marburg

Marburg is first recorded in 1138/39, though its castle dates back to the 9th–10th centuries, and in 2022 the town marked 800 years since the Reinhardsbrunn Chronicle mentioned its citizenry in 1222. It rose to prominence when Landgravine Elisabeth of Thuringia chose it as her widow's seat in 1228 and founded a hospital; after her canonisation in 1235 the Teutonic Order began building St. Elisabeth's Church over her grave. From 1248 to 1604 Marburg was, with interruptions, the residence of the Landgraves of Hesse. In 1527 Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous founded the university, the oldest still-existing Protestant university in the world, and in 1529 the castle hosted the Marburg Colloquy between Luther and Zwingli.

Names linked with Marburg

St. Elisabeth of Thuringia (1207–1231) is the town's patron. Marburg-born Landgrave Philip I the Magnanimous (1504–1567) founded the university where the Brothers Grimm later studied, and Emil von Behring, the first Nobel laureate in Medicine, worked here.

The town lies on the Lahn, with the Landgrave Castle and the half-timbered Upper Town above the valley. St. Elisabeth's Church, consecrated on 1 May 1283, is the first purely Gothic church in Germany; the Upper Town also keeps the Town Hall (1512–1513), the Old University and the late-Gothic Kugelhaus (1491).
