Milan: from Celtic Medhelanon to today
Milan was founded around 590 BC by the Celtic Insubres as Medhelanon. The Romans took it in 222 BC and Latinized the name to Mediolanum; in 286 Emperor Diocletian moved the capital of the Western Roman Empire here, a role the city kept until 402. In 313 Constantine issued the Edict of Milan here. Saint Ambrose, bishop of Milan from 374 to 397 and the city's patron saint, gave his name to the Ambrosian Rite. Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) worked here from 1482 to 1499, painting The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie. Novelist Alessandro Manzoni (1785–1873), author of The Betrothed, was born in Milan.
