Montreal: from Ville-Marie to a metropolis

Montreal's story begins on 2 October 1535, when Jacques Cartier visited the Iroquoian village of Hochelaga at the foot of Mount Royal. In 1611 Samuel de Champlain set up a fur-trading post here, and on 17 May 1642 Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve founded Ville-Marie and became its first governor. The name Montreal entered official documents in 1705, the city was incorporated in 1832, and from 1844 to 1849 it was the capital of the Province of Canada. Founder Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve (1612–1676) placed the first cross on Mount Royal in 1643. Jeanne Mance (1606–1673) founded the H?tel-Dieu de Montr?al, the city's first hospital, in 1645 and died in Montreal. Jazz pianist Oscar Peterson (1925–2007), winner of eight Grammy Awards, was born here and grew up in Little Burgundy. A Ukrainian community took root in Montreal before 1914, and St. Michael's on Iberville Street was the city's first Ukrainian Catholic church.
