Nesebar: from Mesembria to the Pearl of the Black Sea

Nesebar's recorded history begins with Mesembria, a colony founded on a Thracian site by Dorians from Megara at the start of the 6th century BC. The city minted bronze and silver coins from the 5th century BC and gold from the 3rd. Khan Krum took it in 812 after a two-week siege, and it flourished most under Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander (1331–1371). The old name Mesemvriya was replaced by Nesebar in 1934; the town became an architectural and archaeological reserve in 1956 and its old part a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

Folklorist Georgios Megas (1893–1976), actor Georgi Dzhubrilov (1938–2004) and rhythmic gymnast Zhulieta Shishmanova (1936–1978) were born in Nesebar.

The Old Town occupies a peninsula linked to the mainland by a roughly 400-metre isthmus with an old windmill. Known as the town of forty churches, it keeps the Old Metropolis of St Sophia (5th–6th c.), the New Metropolis of St Stephen (11th c.), and the churches of Christ Pantocrator and St John Aliturgetos, as well as the Archaeological Museum.
