Nuremberg: from imperial castle to today

Nuremberg's documented history begins in 1050, as the site of an imperial castle. In 1219 Emperor Frederick II granted it the Great Charter of Freedom, with town rights, the right to mint coins and an independent customs policy. Charles IV's Golden Bull of 1356 required every newly elected German king to hold his first Imperial Diet here, and in 1423 Emperor Sigismund entrusted the city with the Imperial Regalia, kept here until 1796. The Free Imperial City passed to Bavaria in 1806, and in 1835 Germany's first railway opened between Nuremberg and F?rth. Since 1990 Nuremberg has been a twin town of Kharkiv.

Names linked with Nuremberg

Albrecht D?rer (1471–1528), the painter and printmaker of the German Renaissance, was born here, as was the Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel (1653–1706), organist of St. Sebaldus Church. Hans Sachs (1494–1576), the most famous of the city's Meistersingers, became the hero of Wagner's opera, and Martin Behaim (1459–1507) made the first world globe.

Nuremberg today

The walled Old Town lies on the Pegnitz River beneath Nuremberg Castle. The Hauptmarkt holds the Gothic Frauenkirche (1352–1362) and the Sch?ner Brunnen fountain (c. 1385), while St. Lorenz church dominates the south of the old city. The Germanisches Nationalmuseum is Germany's largest museum of cultural history. The city is known for its Christkindlesmarkt, Germany's largest Christmas market, Lebkuchen gingerbread, Nuremberg bratwurst and the International Toy Fair.
