Pordenone: from river port to today

Pordenone takes its name from the Latin Portus Naonis, the port on the Naone, today's Noncello River. In 1291 Duke Albert I of Habsburg granted the town its first statutes, and in 1314 it received city status. After a fire on 23 August 1318 destroyed the largely wooden town, it was rebuilt in stone, and the bell tower of St. Mark's Cathedral was inaugurated in 1347. Bartolomeo d'Alviano brought Pordenone under Venice for good in 1514, and from 1537 the Republic ruled it directly for more than two and a half centuries. The town joined the Kingdom of Italy in 1866 and became a provincial capital in 1968.

Names linked with Pordenone

Franciscan friar and missionary explorer Odoric of Pordenone (1286–1331) came from Villanova, now part of the town. The mannerist painter Giovanni Antonio de' Sacchis (c. 1484–1539), known as Il Pordenone, painted the Madonna della Misericordia altarpiece in the cathedral, and Pomponio Amalteo (1505–1588) designed the Town Hall clock tower.

The town sits on the west bank of the Noncello between Udine and Venice. Its heart is Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, lined with frescoed palaces known as the Urbs picta and closed by the Gothic Palazzo Comunale (1291–1395).
