Saarbr?cken first appears in a deed of Emperor Otto III from 999 granting the "castellum Sarabrucca" to the Bishops of Metz. In 1321–1322 Count Johann I gave town rights to Saarbr?cken and to the fishing village of St. Johann across the Saar, and from 1381 to 1793 the Counts of Nassau-Saarbr?cken ruled here. Under Prince William Henry (1741–1768) the architect Friedrich Joachim Stengel shaped the Baroque city, completing the Ludwigskirche in 1775.
