Salzburg: a bit of history

Salzburg stands on the site of Roman Iuvavum, which became a municipium in 45 AD. Around 696 Bishop Rupert received its remains from Duke Theodo II of Bavaria and founded St Peter's Abbey; the city became a bishop's seat in 739 and an archbishopric in 798. Its name comes from the salt barges on the Salzach River. Archbishop Gebhard built Hohensalzburg Fortress in 1077, and the oldest known city law dates from 1287. In the 17th century the prince-archbishops Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, Markus Sittikus and Paris Lodron had the centre rebuilt in Baroque style. Salzburg returned to Austria for good in 1816, and its historic centre became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

Notable people of Salzburg

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) was born here and served at the archbishop's court from 1773 to 1781. Other natives include Joseph Mohr (1792–1848), who wrote the words of 'Silent Night', physicist Christian Doppler (1803–1853), poet Georg Trakl (1887–1914) and conductor Herbert von Karajan (1908–1989). Writer Stefan Zweig lived here for about 15 years until 1934.

Landmarks and local features

The city lies on the Salzach at the northern edge of the Alps, between the M?nchsberg and Kapuzinerberg hills, with the 1,972 m Untersberg less than 16 km away. Hohensalzburg Fortress, reached by funicular since 1892, overlooks Salzburg Cathedral, Mozart's birthplace on Getreidegasse, Mirabell Palace and gardens (1606) and Nonnberg Abbey. Each July and August the city hosts the Salzburg Festival, and The Sound of Music was filmed here in the 1960s. Ukrainians, over 1,500 of them, are among the city's largest foreign resident groups.
