Seoul: from Baekje to a modern capital

Seoul traces its history to 18 BC, when the people of Baekje founded a settlement in the Han River basin. In the 11th century Goryeo built a summer palace here, known as the "Southern Capital". In September 1394 Yi Seong-gye, founder of the Joseon dynasty, chose Hanyang as his new capital; Gyeongbokgung Palace was finished in 1395 and the Fortress Wall around 1396. In the late 19th century Seoul became the first city in East Asia to introduce electricity in a palace. Since 26 September 2023 Seoul has been a sister city of Kyiv.

Notable people of Seoul

Sejong the Great (1397–1450), the fourth Joseon monarch remembered for creating the Hangul alphabet, was born in Hanyang. Video art pioneer Nam June Paik (1932–2006) was also born in Seoul.

The Han River divides the city into northern and southern halves, while N Seoul Tower crowns Namsan mountain. Landmarks include Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces (UNESCO-listed in 1997), Bukchon Hanok Village, the Cheonggyecheon stream and Lotte World Tower.
