The earliest mention of the city is a 1st-century BC Athenian inscription about the "city of the Serdi", the tribe behind its ancient name Serdica. Under Emperor Trajan (98–117) it became a Roman municipium, and in 311 the Edict of Toleration by Galerius, the first edict legalising Christianity, was issued here. In 809 Khan Krum brought the city into the First Bulgarian Empire, and it became known as Sredets. The name Sofia comes from the Saint Sofia Church and appears in documents of about 1359 and 1376. From 1530 it was the capital of Rumelia Eyalet for about three centuries, and on 3 April 1879, on Marin Drinov's proposal, it was chosen as the capital of Bulgaria.
Roman emperors Aurelian (215–275) and Galerius (260–311) were born in Serdica. Ukrainian thinker Mykhailo Drahomanov (1841–1895) lived and worked in Sofia from 1889 to 1895 and is buried here; the city also hosted an embassy of the Ukrainian People's Republic in 1918–1921 and is twinned with Kyiv.
Sofia lies in the Sofia Valley at the foot of Vitosha mountain, with the Iskar River flowing near its eastern side. Highlights include the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which holds 10,000 people, the Boyana Church (UNESCO World Heritage since 1979), the 4th-century Rotunda of St. George, the 6th-century Church of Saint Sophia and pedestrian Vitosha Boulevard. The city is known for its 49 mineral and thermal springs. You can order a bouquet for delivery in Sofia online from Ukraine or any other country.
