Thessaloniki was founded around 315 BC by King Cassander of Macedon, who named it after his wife Thessalonike, a half-sister of Alexander the Great. In 128 BC it became the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia, and around AD 50 the Apostle Paul preached here; his two letters to the Thessalonians are part of the New Testament. Under Byzantium it was the empire's second city after Constantinople. Sultan Murad II took the city in 1430, and on 8 November 1912 it became part of the Kingdom of Greece. After the Great Fire of 1917 the centre was rebuilt to a plan by the French architect Ernest H?brard, and in 1997 Thessaloniki was European Capital of Culture.
The brothers Cyril (826–869) and Methodius (815–885), who devised the Glagolitic alphabet for Old Church Slavonic, were born here. Mustafa Kemal Atat?rk was born in the city in 1881; his birthplace is now a museum. Thessaloniki also has a Ukrainian link: on 18 April 2003 it signed a friendship protocol with Dnipro, then called Dnipropetrovsk.
The city lies on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean, with the Axios (Vardar) delta to the west. Its symbol is the 33.9-metre White Tower on the waterfront, now a museum of the city's history. Fifteen Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments, including the basilicas of Hagios Demetrios and Hagia Sophia, the Rotunda and Panagia Chalkeon, have been UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1988. Above the centre rises Ano Poli, the Upper Town, with the Heptapyrgion fortress. The city hosts the annual International Fair and International Film Festival, whose laureates include the Ukrainian film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors. Aristotle University, founded in 1926, is the largest in Greece. We will hand your flowers to the recipient at any address in Thessaloniki.
