Utrecht traces its origins to the Roman fort of Traiectum, built around 50 AD on the empire's Rhine frontier. In 723 Charles Martel granted the fortress to the bishops, making the city the religious centre of the Netherlands, and on 2 June 1122 Emperor Henry V granted it city rights. In 1522 Utrecht-born Adriaan Boeyens was elected Pope Adrian VI.
