Vancouver: from a sawmill settlement to an Olympic city

Modern Vancouver grew out of Gastown, a settlement that formed in 1867 around the tavern of John "Gassy Jack" Deighton next to Hastings Mill. Long before that, in 1792, Captain George Vancouver explored Burrard Inlet. In 1870 the townsite of Granville was laid out, and on 6 April 1886 the city was incorporated as Vancouver; the transcontinental Canadian Pacific Railway arrived the following year. Vancouver hosted the 1954 Commonwealth Games, Expo 86 and the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Since 1944 it has been a sister city of Odesa, Ukraine.
