Washington, D.C. in brief

Washington, D.C., officially the District of Columbia, is the federal capital of the United States. Its founding date is 16 July 1790, when George Washington signed the Residence Act creating a capital on the Potomac River. Pierre Charles L'Enfant designed the city in 1791, and on 9 September that year it was named after the first president. Congress held its first session here on 17 November 1800, as John Adams moved into the newly finished White House. In 1846 the Virginia portion, including Alexandria, was returned, and in 1871 the whole district became a single municipality.
