The Roman town of Andautonia stood near present-day Zagreb from the 1st to the 5th century. Zagreb itself traces its history to 1094, when Hungarian King Ladislaus founded a diocese and the church settlement of Kaptol grew around the cathedral; the name first appears in a charter of 1134. In 1242 King B?la IV granted neighbouring Gradec the Golden Bull, making it a free royal city. Zagreb became the Croatian capital in 1557, and in 1669 the Jesuits founded the academy that preceded the University of Zagreb.
Ban Josip Jela?i? (1801–1859) united Gradec and Kaptol, and the main square bears his name. Engineer and inventor Slavoljub Eduard Penkala (1871–1922), a citizen of Zagreb, created the inventions from which the ball-point pen developed.
Zagreb lies on the Sava River at the foot of Medvednica, and its Upper Town is one of the best-preserved historic cores in Croatia. Highlights include Zagreb Cathedral, Ban Jela?i? Square, St. Mark's Square, the Stone Gate, Lotr??ak Tower with its noon cannon shot since 1877, the Museum of Broken Relationships and Zrinjevac Park. The Floraart flower exhibition is held in late May or early June. A monument to Taras Shevchenko was unveiled on Ukrainian Street in Travno in 2015, and the mayors of Kyiv and Zagreb signed a friendship and cooperation agreement in 2024.
