?elech?w first appears reliably in the Peter's Pence payment registers of 1325–1327, and a parish was founded here in 1325. It held town rights before 1447, and on 4 September 1447 King Casimir IV Jagiellon granted it a weekly Tuesday market. As a private noble town it first belonged to the Cio?ek family, who later took the name ?elechowski. In 1792 it passed to Ignacy Wyssogota Zakrzewski, the first president of Warsaw, who laid out a new Market Square, built the town hall and founded new cemeteries. In the second half of the 19th century ?elech?w was known for shoemaking and was quickly rebuilt after the great fire of 1880.
Locals remember Romuald Traugutt (1826–1864), later dictator of the January Uprising, who lived here for eight years as a sapper battalion officer; his bust stands in the town. Ignacy Wyssogota Zakrzewski (1745–1802) lived, died and is buried here. Yiddish writer and playwright Itzhak Meir Weissenberg (1881–1938) was born in ?elech?w, and the local secondary school bears the name of historian Joachim Lelewel, who represented the ?elech?w district in the Sejm in 1829–1831.
The town sits on the ?elech?w Upland where Masovia, the Lublin region and Podlasie meet, on the ?elech?wka stream with its fish ponds. Its heart is the Market Square, 114 metres per side and one of the largest in Europe, with a classicist town hall and cloth hall. Highlights include the Baroque Church of St. Stanislaus (1741), the oldest surviving monument, the Church of the Annunciation, the palace and park begun by Jerzy Lubomirski, and the 1923 fire station whose tower plays a bugle call at noon.
