Aleksandr?w Kujawski began in 1834 as the Aleksandrowo manor farm, carved out of the Osno estate in the Russian partition of Poland and named after its owner, nobleman Aleksander Sumi?ski. Growth came with the Warsaw–Bydgoszcz railway: a border station and customs house opened here in December 1862, and during the January Uprising of 1863 local railwaymen and customs officers helped smuggle people and weapons. On 4 September 1879 Emperor Alexander II received German Emperor Wilhelm I in the station apartments. The town gained full municipal rights by a decree of J?zef Pi?sudski on 4 February 1919. In 1920–1921 it hosted an internment camp for soldiers of the Ukrainian People's Republic Army.
