What to know about Ayia Napa

Ayia Napa takes its name from a Venetian-era monastery: "Ayia" means "holy" in Greek and the archaic "Napa" means "wooded valley". Legend says a hunter found an icon of the Virgin Mary in a cave, and a monastery grew around it; the Venetians built a church there in about 1500. According to local tradition, Nikolaos Kemitzis of Thessaloniki settled near the monastery around 1790. In 2014 the Government of Cyprus gave Ayia Napa the status of a main city-urban centre, and in 2017 it became the first city in Cyprus with a participatory budget.

The town sits near Cape Greco at the far eastern end of Cyprus's southern coast, in the Kokkinochoria ("Red Villages") area named after its red soil. Key sights are the medieval Ayia Napa Monastery, now a museum, the Thalassa Municipal Museum of the Sea, the Sculpture Park opened in 2014, the Makronissos Tombs and the Museum of Underwater Sculptures with 93 works by Jason deCaires Taylor.
