Bat Yam: from "House and Garden" to a seaside city

Bat Yam began in 1919, when the Bayit VeGan ("House and Garden") homeowners association set out to build a garden suburb near Jaffa. Plots were allocated by lottery in 1926 and the first six families settled on the dunes; a synagogue was dedicated in 1928 and the first school, Tachkemoni, opened in 1936. That year the settlement became a local council, and in December 1937 it was renamed Bat Yam, "daughter of the sea". After 1948 mass immigration made it grow quickly, and it gained city status in 1958. Its Brutalist City Hall, an inverted ziggurat by Zvi Hecker, Eldar Sharon and Alfred Neumann, was built in 1960–1963.

Names linked to Bat Yam

Yiddish writer Sholem Asch (1880–1957) spent his later years here and left his home to the city, now a museum. The Ryback House shows the work of painter Issachar Ber Ryback (1897–1935), born in Yelisavetgrad, today Kropyvnytskyi in Ukraine. Singer Noa (born 1969) and violinist Miri Ben-Ari (born 1978) are among the city's notable people, and Bat Yam-born footballer Gal Shish (born 1989) played for Volyn Lutsk. The city lies on the Mediterranean just south of Tel Aviv, with six beaches and a 3.2 km promenade linked to the Tel Aviv boardwalk.
