Gmina Psary: from medieval villages to today

The present-day rural Gmina Psary in B?dzin County, Silesian Voivodeship, was formed in 1973 and consists of 10 villages: Psary, Sarn?w, D?bie, Precz?w, Grodk?w, Strzy?owice, G?ra Siewierska, Gol?sza, Brz?kowice and Malinowice. The earliest records date from the 14th century: G?ra Siewierska and Brz?kowice are known from 1357 and D?bie from 1438, which Jan D?ugosz listed as «Dambye» in his «Liber beneficiorum». In 1931 remains of an ancient cemetery were found on Mogilnica hill, and Lusatian culture burials were discovered near Grodk?w. Around 1400 the area became part of the Duchy of Siewierz, bought in 1443 by Bishop Zbigniew Ole?nicki of Krak?w and held by the bishops until 1790.

Gmina Psary today

The gmina lies in the D?browa Basin, at the northern edge of the Upper Silesian Industrial Region, next to Sosnowiec, D?browa G?rnicza and B?dzin. Iron ore and coal were mined here for centuries, and «Tadeusz», the oldest coal mine of the Zag??bie region, operated on its territory. Landmarks include the Parish of Saints Peter and Paul in Psary, the Parish of the Assumption in D?bie and ?urawiniec Park in Psary, reopened after its 2018 revitalisation.
