What to know about Miko??w

Miko??w first appears in a 1222 charter of Duke Casimir I of Opole naming "comes Andreas, castellanus de Miculow", showing it was already a stronghold and castellany seat. The Church of St. Adalbert is first recorded in 1266. In 1545 Emperor Ferdinand I granted the right to hold fairs and weekly markets, and on 27 July 1547 Baron Jan Thurzo, lord of Pszczyna, gave the town its municipal ordinance. After the First Silesian War in 1742 Miko??w passed to Prussia, and on 20 May 1794 a great fire destroyed the centre with the town hall and archive. In the 19th century it became a hub of Polish printing in Upper Silesia. The town joined Poland on 29 June 1922 and has been a county seat since 1998.

Notable people

Poet Rafa? Wojaczek (1945–1971) was born here, and a plaque marks his childhood home. Silesian activist, writer and printer Karol Miarka the Elder (1825–1882) worked in Miko??w from 1874, moving the newspaper "Katolik" here. Actress and singer Anna Dereszowska (b. 1981) is also a native.

The town sits on the Silesian Upland by the Jamna stream, next to Katowice and Tychy, with over 2,100 hectares of forest. Landmarks include the Church of Our Lady of the Snows (1270–1280), the Neo-Romanesque Basilica of St. Adalbert (1843–1861), the Market Square with its 1872 town hall, the Planty parks with a salt graduation tower and the Silesian Botanical Garden (2003).
