Radom: from the first record to today

Radom first appears in a bull of Pope Adrian IV in 1155, and by 1233 it was the seat of a castellan. In 1350 King Casimir III the Great founded the New Town with a royal castle, a defensive wall and a town hall, and in 1364 Radom received Magdeburg rights. The Pact of Vilnius and Radom, strengthening the Polish–Lithuanian union, was signed here on 18 March 1401, and in 1505 the Sejm at Radom Castle adopted the Nihil novi act and ?aski's Statute. The Crown Treasury Tribunal sat in the city in 1613–1764, and from 1844 to 1914 Radom was the capital of a governorate.

Names linked to Radom

The early Polish composer Miko?aj z Radomia (c. 1400–1450) came from Radom. The city is also linked to painter Jacek Malczewski (1854–1929), whose name the local museum bears, writer Witold Gombrowicz (1904–1969), honoured by an international theatre festival, and Academy Award-winning director Andrzej Wajda (1926–2016).

Radom today

The city lies on the Mleczna River about 100 km south of Warsaw. Highlights include the Gothic St. Wenceslaus Church (13th century), St. John the Baptist Church (1360–1370), the Bernardine church and monastery (1468–1507), the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary (1899–1908) and the G?ska and Esterka houses.
