What to know about St. P?lten

The oldest part of St. P?lten stands on the site of the Roman town of Aelium Cetium (2nd–4th centuries). A Benedictine monastery of St Hippolytus was founded here in 791, and the saint's name gave the city its own. Market rights came around 1050, and in 1159 Bishop Konrad of Passau granted town status. In the 17th and 18th centuries Jakob Prandtauer and Joseph Munggenast made it a centre of Baroque building. On 10 July 1986 the state parliament chose St. P?lten to replace Vienna as capital of Lower Austria; the state government moved here in 1997.

Baroque architect Jakob Prandtauer (1660–1726) died here. Art historian Otto Demus (1902–1990), pianist J?rg Demus (1928–2019) and actor-director Bernhard Wicki (1919–2000) are also linked to the city.

The city lies on the Traisen River, north of the Alps and south of the Wachau.
