What to know about Oleksandriia

The first written record of Usykivka, the settlement on the site of today's Oleksandriia, dates from 1746, when Cossacks of the Myrhorod Regiment settled here on the chumak trade route from Poltava to Crimea. In 1752–1764 it became the New Serbia fortification of Becheia, named after the Serbian town of Be?ej. In 1784 it became the district town of Oleksandriisk, and from 1806 Oleksandriia was a district centre of Kherson Governorate.

Famous natives of Oleksandriia

Slavist Dmytro Chyzhevskyi (1894–1977), cosmonaut Leonid Popov (1945) and gymnast Hryhorii Misiutin (1970), a 1992 Olympic champion, were born here.

Oleksandriia today

The city stands on the Inhulets and Berezivka rivers. Its historic centre at their confluence is now Shevchenko Park and the Nika stadium; other landmarks include the Oleksandriia Museum of Peace, the Local History Museum named after Antonina Khudiakova and the Holy Protection Cathedral.
