Ananiv in brief

Ananiv first appears in documents in 1767 as the sloboda of Anani, named, according to legend, after its first settler, the Zaporozhian Cossack Ananii. It was one of the khan's settlements between the Buh and the Dniester and passed to the Russian Empire under the Treaty of Jassy in 1791. From 1834 Ananiv was a county town known for its grain trade. In April 1920 residents rose against the Bolsheviks, supported by UNR Army units on the First Winter Campaign.

Famous names of Ananiv

The composer Petro Nishchynsky (1832–1896) lived here in 1875–1882, and the landscape painter Yevhen Stolytsia (1870–1929) spent much of his life in the town. The chemist Semen Volfkovych (1896–1980) and the poet Taras Fediuk (born 1954), a Shevchenko Prize laureate, were born in Ananiv.

Ananiv today

The town lies on the Tylihul River, 160 km from Odesa. Landmarks include the late 19th-century St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the house of Yevhen Stolytsia, the boys' (1875) and Mariinska girls' (1876) gymnasium buildings, the History and Art Museum, a branch of the Odesa Art Museum, and the 2018 memorial to the UNR Army soldiers.
