What to know about Andrushivka

Andrushivka has been known since 1683, when it was listed as Andrusovka among "empty villages". Legend says it was named after Andrii, or Andrus, son of a landowner called Kuchohorskyi, who moved the village to its present site. From the 17th century the Berzhynski magnates owned it, building a palace above the pond and laying out a park. Zhytomyr region's first sugar factory opened here in 1848, and in 1869 the estate passed to the Tereshchenko sugar industrialists, who rebuilt the palace in French Neo-Renaissance style. Andrushivka became a town in 1975. Locals honour Major Oleksii Zaiets (1981–2014), a native who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Notable people of Andrushivka

The poet sisters Liudmyla Morozova-Kurek (1887–1952), known as Liudmyla Voloshka, and Veronika Morozova (1890–1966), who wrote as Veronika Morozivna, were born here, as were academician Anatolii Pidhornyi (1932–1996) and film scholar Mykola Slobodian (1935–2022). In 1905 future metallurgist and Central Rada minister Ivan Feshchenko-Chopivskyi (1884–1952) worked at the local sugar factory.

Andrushivka today

The town lies on both banks of the Huiva, 47 km from Zhytomyr. Its highlight is the mid-19th-century Berzhynski-Tereshchenko Palace surrounded by Andrushivka Park; the House of Culture with 1960s stained glass and St Blaise's Catholic Church (2007–2010) are also worth a look. On the outskirts stands the Andrushivka Astronomical Observatory, Ukraine's first certified private observatory, which in 2003 discovered asteroid 133293 Andrushivka.
