Arbuzynka: from Harbuzynka to today

Arbuzynka's history as a village dates from 1780, when part of the Gagauz Cossacks were settled here. In 1782 serfs taken from the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra were resettled here, and in 1809–1810 Cossacks arrived from Poltava Governorate. Until 1812 the village was called Harbuzynka; a wooden church was built in 1797, and in 1818 it became a military settlement of the Bug Uhlan Division. A railway was built nearby in 1909–1914, Arbuzynka became an urban-type settlement in 1967 and was a district centre until 2020.

Notable people of Arbuzynka

Arbuzynka is the birthplace of Schema-hegumen Kuksha of Odesa (Kuzma Velychko, 1875–1964), a venerated Orthodox saint, tank commander Ivan Torzhynskyi (1915–2000), Hero of the Soviet Union, and writer and journalist Vira Marushchak (1949). Petro Kosiachnyi (1897–1937), later director of the Kyiv film studio, taught in the village. Locals also honour Lieutenant Oleksandr Zakernychnyi (1989–2015), a native and teacher at the local agricultural lyceum, who was killed defending Ukraine.
