Artsyz: from founding to today
Artsyz dates back to 1816, when German colonists founded Colony No. 14 here. By decree of Emperor Alexander I it was named after the 1814 victory over Napoleon at the French town of Arcis-sur-Aube. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Artsyz was a well-known horse-trading centre, and from 1916 a railway junction. It was under Romanian rule in 1918–1940, became an urban-type settlement in 1957 and a town in 1963.
Artsyz today
The town lies at the confluence of the Chaha and Kohylnyk rivers. Landmarks include the Orphans' Fund building (1907, architect Christian Beutelsbacher), the central square with clock towers, and a contemporary art gallery opened in 2020 in a former boiler house. The Artsyz railway junction is one of the largest in Bessarabia, and local food producers make meat, dairy, confectionery and canned goods. Our courier will deliver flowers anywhere in Artsyz.
