What to know about Babai

The written history of Babai begins in 1647; later the village belonged to Cossack colonel Hryhorii Donets and his descendants. The first Church of the Archangel Michael was built in 1650, so the village was long also called Arkhanhelske, and from the 1650s it was part of the Kharkiv Regiment. Its best-known chapter is 1774, when philosopher Hryhorii Skovoroda lived with local priest Yakiv Pravytskyi and finished his Kharkiv Fables here. In 1914 Babai was a volost centre with 3,370 residents, and in 1938 it became an urban-type settlement.

Names linked to Babai

Besides Hryhorii Skovoroda, Babai is linked with Admiral Ihor Voronchenko, born here in 1964 and commander of the Ukrainian Navy in 2016–2020, and with zoologist Alfred Dulytskyi, who taught biology and chemistry at the local school in 1964–1967.

The settlement lies on the right bank of the Uda, opposite Kharkiv, with the Stavytska River running through its centre and an oak forest at its edge. Landmarks include the priest's house where Skovoroda lived, the Skovoroda monument and the Skovoroda spring, a protected hydrological natural monument.
