Bar: from Rov fortress to Queen Bona's town

The town first appears in documents in 1401 under the name Rov. On 3 June 1537 Queen Bona Sforza bought it, ordered a new fortress to be built and renamed the town Bar after her native Bari in Italy. In 1540 Bar received Magdeburg rights and a coat of arms bearing the queen's initials. In 1636 Grand Crown Hetman Stanis?aw Koniecpolski moved his residence here, in summer 1648 the castle was taken by Maksym Kryvonis's troops, and on 29 February 1768 the Bar Confederation was proclaimed here.

Famous people of Bar

Mathematician Viktor Bunyakovsky (1804–1889), vice-president of the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences, was born in Bar, and a central street bears his name. Writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky (1864–1913) spent part of his childhood here. Casimir Pulaski (1746–1779), later a general of the Continental Army, is linked to the Bar Confederation. Actor Igor Vovkovinskiy (1982–2021), 234.5 cm tall, was born here. Locals also honour their defenders, among them National Guard lieutenant Andrii Tokarchuk (1983–2022).

Bar today

The town lies on the Podolian Upland on the Riv River, 68 km from Vinnytsia. Key sights are the ruins of Bar Fortress (1538–1636), the Cathedral of the Dormition (1757), St Anne's Church (St Nicholas since 1811), the 16th-century Carmelite monastery with the Church of the Intercession and a Greek Catholic church of 1616, plus Bona Sforza Hill.
