Baranivka: from its first record to today

Baranivka is first recorded in 1565 as a village of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Its name is linked either to the surname of its first settlers or to an old craft: decorative glazed pottery known as barantsi was made here. In the 17th century the town belonged to the Ostrozky and Lubomirski princes, and by 1635 44% of residents were craftsmen. The turning point came in 1802, when entrepreneur Mezer founded a porcelain factory near a kaolin deposit on the Sluch; in 1815 he was allowed to mark his wares with the state coat of arms. Baranivka became an urban-type settlement in 1938 and a town on 17 May 2001.

Notable people of Baranivka

Locals honour Vitalii Hasiuk (1984–2015), one of the "cyborgs" who defended Donetsk Airport; a memorial plaque was unveiled at School No. 2 in January 2016. Natives also include athlete Oleksii Demianiuk (1958–1999), a 1980 Olympian, and hygienist Pavlo Maistruk (1924–1988), Doctor of Medical Sciences.

Baranivka today

The town stands on the Sluch, where the Zhaborichka flows into it. Baranivka remains a porcelain centre whose wares have been shown at international fairs in Europe, America, Asia and Africa, and the Porcelain Museum tells its story. Landmarks include the Catholic church, the UPA memorial sign on Freedom Square (2015) and a Soviet soldiers' mass grave. Asteroid 214487 Baranivka bears the town's name.
