Baryshivka: a Cossack company town on the Trubizh

Historians link Baryshivka with Baruch, a settlement mentioned in the chronicle under 1125, while the present town first appears in 1603 as Baryshivske Horodyshche and from 1630 as Baryshove. That year its people joined Taras Triasylo’s uprising, and from 1648 to 1782 the town was the seat of the Baryshivka company of the Pereiaslav Regiment. In 1754 its households were granted to the Cossack officer and later general judge Illia Zhurman; from 1775 it belonged to Colonel Sulyma. A 1788 register lists three annual fairs here, supplied with Don fish and Crimean salt. Taras Shevchenko visited in 1843 and described the town in one of his novellas.

Notable people of Baryshivka

Baryshivka is the birthplace of preacher and translator Andrii Bratanovskyi-Romanenko (1761–1805), publisher Stefan Kulzhenko (1837–1906), literary scholar Petro Kolesnyk (1905–1987) and astronomer Svitlana Herasymenko (born 1945), co-discoverer of comet Churyumov–Gerasimenko. Poet and translator Mykola Zerov worked here in 1920–1923.

The town lies on the right bank of the Trubizh, 6 km from the Kyiv–Kharkiv highway, and has its own railway station. Sights include the Taras Shevchenko Museum, the local history museum, Holy Trinity Church, a memorial cross marking the first chronicle mention and an old wooden bell tower. A “May tree” celebrates the partnership with Pullach in Germany. The tannery dates back to the 19th century, and Molniia is one of Ukraine’s largest zip and fastener makers.
