Bashtanka: from Poltavka to Hero City

Bashtanka dates from 1811, when Cossacks and state peasants from the Poltava and Chernihiv regions were given land for the settlement of Poltavske. In the late 1820s Poltavka became a military settlement of the Buh Uhlan Division, in 1899 a folk theatre opened, and during the Ukrainian Revolution the village led an anti-Denikin peasant uprising that proclaimed the Bashtanka Republic. It became a district centre in 1926 and was renamed Bashtanka in 1928. On 1 March 2022 territorial defence fighters and residents stood up to defend the town, and on 1 October 2025 Bashtanka was awarded the title Hero City of Ukraine.
