Bilopillia, a town with chronicle history

Bilopillia's recorded history begins with the Old Rus fortified town of Vyr, an outpost against nomads mentioned by Volodymyr Monomakh in his Instruction under 1096; in 1239 Vyr was burned by the Mongols. In 1672 a new settlement arose on the old site: at first it was called Kryha after the river, while the name Bilopillia came from settlers from a town of the same name. Bilopillia was a company town of the Sumy Cossack Regiment with fortifications of 9 towers and a stockade of 13 towers, and four annual fairs drew merchants from many cities. After 1765 it became the centre of a commissariat, in 1780–1797 a district centre, and from 1923 a raion centre.

People Bilopillia is proud of

Bilopillia is the birthplace of educator and writer Anton Makarenko (1888–1939), born here into a railway worker's family, and of poet Oleksandr Oles (1878–1944). Philosopher, educator and geologist Maksym Antonovych (1835–1918) and actor Danylo Antonovych (1889–1975), People's Artist of the USSR, were also born here. As a teenager, around 1890–1894, the painter Kazimir Malevich lived in the town with his parents.

Bilopillia today

The town stands where the Kryha flows into the Vyr River, 44 km from Sumy, with Vorozhba adjoining it downstream. Key places include the A. S. Makarenko Museum, the Oleksandr Oles Museum, the Makarenko monument at the town entrance, the Taras Shevchenko monument (2010) in Shevchenko Park and the Alley of Glory memorial. The Old Park, on the site of the Vyr fortress, hosts the Vyrskyi Hrad historical reenactment festival. Town Day is 21 September. We will deliver a bouquet to any address in Bilopillia.
