Berezan in brief

Berezan is first recorded in the 1616 inventory of the Pereiaslav starosty, and by 1620 inspectors noted saltpetre production here. In the late 1620s or early 1630s the town became the centre of the Berezan company of the Pereiaslav Regiment. In 1674 Hetman Ivan Samoilovych confirmed Berezan to Pereiaslav colonel Dmytrashko-Raicha, and in 1688 Ivan Mazepa reissued the grant. Taras Shevchenko stayed here in 1843 and wrote the poem "The Plundered Grave". The Kyiv — Poltava railway with Berezan station opened in 1901, and in 1927 director Arnold Kordium shot one of the first Ukrainian feature films, "Dzhalma", here.

Notable people of Berezan

Poet Stepan Lysovets (1904–1978) was born in Berezan and lived and worked here. Writer, poet, translator and literary critic Ivan Andrusiak lives in the town today.

The town lies on the Nedra River among pine forests and birch groves, with Lake Tsentralne within its limits. The centre has the Berezan Local History Museum, opened in 1975, and a bust of Shevchenko; nearby are the Church of the Annunciation, Glory Park with a memorial to fallen locals and the "Plundered Grave" burial mound with a memorial sign. Berezan is known for Berezanska mineral water and the annual Metal Time heavy music festival. We will deliver a bouquet to any corner of Berezan.
